Premature Babies at Risk in Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Faces Crisis:

NICU Struggle

In Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital, two premature babies have tragically died as the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) ceased functioning due to a lack of electricity. The hospital's director, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, revealed that 37 other babies in the NICU are now at risk due to diminishing fuel for their incubators. The power outage, a result of the ongoing siege and Israeli attacks, is pushing the medical staff to use primitive methods to keep the infants alive.

Critical Situation in the NICU:

The two babies lost their lives due to low temperatures and a lack of oxygen caused by the absence of fuel to power the incubators. Abu Salmiya warned that without electricity, the remaining neonates face a similar fate. The dire situation extends beyond the NICU, as an adult patient also died due to the unavailability of electricity for their ventilator.

Desperate Pleas for Evacuation:

The hospital staff, facing relentless gunfire and attacks, is pleading for guarantees from organizations like the Red Cross for a safe evacuation. Mohammed Obeid, a surgeon at al-Shifa Hospital, emphasized the need for urgent evacuation as the facility, with about 600 inpatients, is on the brink of collapse.

Conflicting Statements on Evacuation:

While the hospital director claimed that the Israeli military did not respond to offers of evacuation, the military spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, stated on Saturday that they would aid in evacuating the babies. However, questions arise about the feasibility of such a plan amidst ongoing conflict and the scarcity of essentials across the Gaza Strip.

International Concerns and Criticisms:

The dire situation at al-Shifa Hospital has drawn international attention, prompting concerns and criticisms. The Israeli military's commitment to assisting with evacuation appears uncertain, raising questions about the practicality and safety of moving infants amid the ongoing conflict.

This heartbreaking situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable infants and other patients in Gaza.
